What are inlays and onlays?

Like fillings, inlays and onlays are restorative treatments after a tooth has suffered decay or injury. Whilst a filling is applied directly into your tooth, inlays and onlays are bespoke restorations made by our talented dental technicians. Inlays and onlays are cemented in place to the appropriate part of the tooth that requires protection and strengthening.

Inlays and onlays – some facts:

• Inlays and onlays are clinically appropriate when there isn’t enough healthy tooth structure to place a normal filling. They are a stronger restoration than fillings and generally last longer.
• Whilst inlays are placed inside a cavity on the tooth, an onlay restores the cusps (or tips) of the tooth.
• Inlays and onlays can be made of materials including composite, porcelain and gold.
